Technical Support FAQ

General

What do I need to watch and listen to the video?

All video on the Rooftop Comedy website is streamed in the Adobe Flash Player. Click here to download the latest version of Flash Player.

Also, you need a pretty decent Internet connection or the video playback will be choppy. For the best playback your Internet connection should support a constant 600Kbit download speed. Most DSL and cable modems should be able to handle it.

Do I need a high-speed connection?

Yes. Rooftop Comedy videos are designed to work best with a DSL, Cable Modem, or faster connection. You must be able to sustain a 600Kbps download stream to watch all the videos (although some do pretty well at 350Kbps). If you think your Internet connection should be able to take it, and the video is still choppy, try testing your actual connection speed at free websites such as PCPitstop (www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp) or Speakeasy (www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/). Make sure you're getting the speed you're paying for.

Login and Passwords

I forgot my password. Am I screwed?

Nah. If you forgot your password and you're NOT logged in, click on "Sign In" at the top of the page (www.rooftopcomedy.com/login/signin). There, you should see a "forgot your password" link. When you click that link, a window should appear asking you for the email address that you used when you first became a member. It's important that the email address you enter match the one you originally registered. If you remember, enter that email address in the form and we'll immediately reset your password to a bunch of crazy letters, and email the new password to the email address you entered. Simply log back into the site with your original Rooftop ID name and new crazy password and you're good to go. If the crazy password is just too crazy to ever remember, click on "My Profile" (www.rooftopcomedy.com/myrooftop/profile) and you can change your password to something else.

I've forgot my Rooftop ID. Now what?

If you forgot your Rooftop ID (your login name), send us an email to support@rooftopcomedy.com with as much stuff as you remember about your login, like what you thought you Rooftop ID was, your email address, your zip code and such, and we'll try to help you out. Don't send your password, as even we don't have access to passwords.

Do I have to log in each time?

You can if you want, but you don't have to. Any time you log in, you have a choice to "Remember me". If you check this box, we'll remember your password for you and log you in each time you come back to the site (you must have cookies enabled on you browser for this to work). For those security nuts out there, don't worry, we don't actually store your password in the cookie because we know that most people use the same passwords over and over. And no, not even Rooftop Comedy personnel will ever be able to see your password.

Why do I have to be a Member to Rate Clips or Shows?

We thought a long time about this and think it's the right thing to do (if you don't, please tell send us your opinion at info@rooftopcomedy.com). We regularly hold "contests" where viewers get to vote for the funniest comic. We award real cash prizes to the winners, so we want to keep the voting as fair as we possible. So, we only allow each user to vote for any particular clip one time (this keeps Kevin's mom from voting for her son 1,000 times in a row). The easiest way to enforce this one user — one vote is to ask folks to become members. Membership is totally free. And members can vote for as many clips as they like. However, a member can only rate a particular clip one time.

Rooftop Comedy does not support downloading of the clips. We'll stream them to you as much as you like, but you can't download them.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes the quality is better than others. What gives?

A few things can cause variations in the quality of a clip:

  1. The overall quality of your viewing experience is very much related to the speed of your Internet connection. If you don't have a broadband connection (e.g., DSL, cable modem or T1), the clips may buffer, skip, look blurry, or explode. Just kidding about the explosion, but it's just not gonna be fun to watch.
  2. Close other unnecessary applications that may be open on your computer, and make sure not to download applications or files while watching Rooftop Comedy. This can slow your computer's ability to handle our video clips.
  3. If you've got a high speed connection, the problem may be that your video-player settings aren't optimized. In the settings for the Windows Media Player, be sure you have selected the proper modem speed. There are fields for minimum and maximum speeds which, if incorrectly set, will limit the amount of bandwidth the incoming video stream can use.
  4. Occasionally comics move very quickly on stage (e.g. jumping jacks, pratfalls, and break dancing). If they're moving too fast, our cameras can't keep up with them and there's nothing we can do. Send them an email and tell them to slow down next time.
  5. Sometimes the Internet gets clogged with traffic, and your connection speed can vary. We wish we could control this. We wish a lot of things. Try watching the clip or show again, or at another time.
I can't download any of the shows.

Sorry, we don't allow folks to download the shows.

I've still got questions!
